| BATANAI MARIMBA | MOTO MOTO ( FIRE FIRE ) | KONICD001 | CD | £ 9.95 | |
| Marimba music is not usually my cup of tea but on hearing the first track my ears caught the unmistakable sound of one of my favorite instruments. Yes, it was the riti, being beautifully sawed by Juldeh Camara. Although he only played on two more of the fourteen tracks I was well and truly hooked. In fact I was so taken with it that I played it twice more. The fragrant sounds of marimba, mbira, chipendani, a bit of brass and that riti of course flooded out from my office accompanied by the group's harmonious vocals and my own frantic foot tapping as they upped the tempo. Definitely recommended and just look what the music press said. Blistering fusion of South African melody and Zimbabwean rhythms driven by a stunning massed marimba section. Enthusiasm and energy barely contained by the stage To, rivetingly visual, gloriously musical, and entirely danceable' and even, 'high-energy rhythms, outrageous costumes and flamboyant style.Their relentless beat and sheer enthusiasm proved irresistible' Need I say anything else. | Marvellous album from Ephat and his troup of musicians, singers and dancers that really shows the true beauty of that very underrated instrument, the mbira. Accompanied by the rattles of the hosho, the mbira players manage to totally fill the air with a wonderful cascade of notes while the powerful and deeply moving vocals tell the song's story in striking contrast to the smoothness of the music. | Formed way back in 1957 by lead singer, guitarist and keyboard player Green Jangano, the Mambos are Zimbabwe's longest running group. They were one of the first bands to sing in both Shona and English and started by singing promotional songs for some of the major companies. This album features one of their top hits Mbuya Nehanda and my favorite - Kudendere. The album is a bit like the curate's egg as it also has four rather lack luster tracks sung in English. | 1. | This album is a pleasant compilation as it reflects the time shortly after independence when young couples were happy, free and thus chose to get married in a new and promising country. Devera Ngwena Jazz Band were the main attraction, so popular that you could hear them being played at weddings or downtown shops through the loud speakers that were usually placed outside the entrance. They were the trendiest thing around and so this music portrays that period. Personally I was beginning to forget some of the tunes as I haven't been in Zimbabwe for so long and am influenced today by other cultures around me. However, as a true Zimbabwean I have a love of Devera Ngwena Jazz Band, especially their old numbers. This album of re-mixes is a real party album! Some of the artists from Zimbabwe that you have available on Natari website, as far as I am concerned were produced at a time when Zimbabwe was still discovering how to develop in the music scene, some of the material was released as 'experimental' as African-modern music hit the scene while the country was still under colonial rule. When the country gained it's independence rhythms that were exsistent before the country's time were thereafter gradually developed that today make Zimbabwean rhumba/the music of Zimbabwe very unique. Unfortuneately some of the really good artists have just disappeared from the music scene for various reasons etc.. but Jonah Moyo and the Band, well they're something else! My thanks to Peter Chikasha over in Sweden for the above. To have a place in my collection it must have been pretty good even if it was experimental. | 1. FULLSTOP 2. NDAFUNGA MAKARE 3. | Jordan Chataika (b 1939 d 1985) has been described as the godfather of Zimbabwean gospel music. Guitarist and singer Jordan started in the early 1960s when most Christians still considered nomadic guitarists like Chataika as unholy? He persevered and during the fight for independence he became well known for his songs which were seen as anti government. After independence he also became a part-time radio presenter and often shared the stage with Oliver Mtukudzi and the late David 'Mr Bulk' Chiyangwa, both gospel musicians of note. The Time Wasters who provide the backing music to this album are actually Oliver Mtukudzi and Pick Kasamba. Newmas was a subsistence farmer by day and gifted musician and teacher by night. | SPIRIT TALK MBIRA GROUP | NDONGA MAHWE - RETURN AS SPIRIT | STPCD04 | CD | £ 11.95 | |
| Chartwell Dutiro is a leading player of one of Africa's most powerful melodic instruments - the mbira. He has played for spirit mediums at many ceremonies in Zimbabwe over the last twenty years but is probably better known abroad for his mbira and sax playing with Thomas Mapfumo's Blacks Unlimited. His international group Spirit Talk Mbira consists of four mbiras combined with voices and the sound of hosho, or rattle. Recorded in London where Chartwell now lives, listening to the intricate sounds of the softly tinkling mbiras is just heavenly. (F.T.Index: Mahororo, Mukariba, Bukatiende. )[9T/62M] | |||||

| VIRGINIA MUKWESHA | CHAMU | SHAVACD003-2 | CD | £ 13.20 | |
| 'Jiti' the rural rock & roll of the Shona people of Zimbabwe gets the treatment from the power packed and gravel voiced Virginia and her chorus. Recorded with the help of Oliver Mutakudzi the music is based on traditional mbira rhythms except for 'Kerebu' which goes back to the time when the drum was king. The traditional sounds of mbira, hosho and ngoma shine out even though the music has been embellished by some marvelous Zimbabwean guitar playing. A smashing album to dance to and when its time to give your tootsies a rest there are copious note to read in the booklet. | ZVISHAVANE SOUNDS | MUTONGI GAVA | ZML1032 | LP | 25.00 | COL |
| I bought this in the late 80s with a whole pile of other Zimbabwe albums and somehow never got around to playing this one. What a mistake that was. This album is simply awesome with that lively twangy guitar playing that is the unmistakeable sound of Zimbabwe. Definitely some of the best tunes I have heard from there and the singing from the six strong group is pretty impressive as well. I should really have a dig around in my collection and see what other gems I have hidden away. ( F.T.Index: Mutongi Gava, Veza Mupini, Ipurezha, Inyama Yembongolo, Hukama Igasva, Gerita, Dai Ndakadzidza. ) [7T/43M] Just as a matter of interest I found only two references to this album and group. The LP was listed in the Sterns Guide II and the web listing was my own one! | |||||
