The Democratic Republic of Congo, as Zaire is now known, is home to a dazzling array of the most famous names in African music and to the captivating sounds of the Cuban influenced Congolese Rumba which evolved into today's vibrant Soukous dance music. One of those albums that you can't quite define. Bikika and her group start out with a couple of soft and sweet 'Mayebo' tracks that will remind you somewhat of Tshala Muana but it then progresses into 'Soukous' proper. While still retaining their perfect vocal harmonies the group, generous throughout with the soukous style guitar riffing, mix in a fair bit of sax to spice things up. In fact the three tracks on side B are positively gorgeous. A real gem for guitar lovers.

Paris based Soukous guitarist Bopol on another stunning outing with this his latest album. Gorgeous in all departments but with his brilliant guitar skills absolutely outstanding. No big band sound on this one to drown out the equally gorgeous vocals. Its wonderful all through but the smooth vocal harmonies of Mahele and the guitar on Bamako Night are wonderful. Dancewise, Koumbe Trahison is going to take a heck of a lot of beating as will the title track. Superb.

When University student Domi gets together with Aurlus Mabele and Dom Louya there is only one thing that you could possibley get - a profusion of beautiful soukous guitar playing and vocals to match. Just listen to the riffing on 'Isabelle-Glah' or the vocals on 'Macy-Domingo'. What doesn't melt your heart will melt the soles off your shoes. Even the odd track out, 'Koya', has super sweet vocals and some lovely sax to make up for it's slower style. Definitely recommended.

Lita Bembo - the great showman of Congo-Zairean music - was one of the most inspirational musicians of the 'new generation' that stormed Kinshasa in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with his band Stukas du Zaire. His unique blend of impassioned Ekonda vocal styles and frenetic guitar patterns turned his compositions into instant hits and his eccentric stage antics and innovative dance routines endeared him to young and old alike. Vincent Luttman of www.nostalgieyamboka.net has lovingly compiled a CD of rare and righteous grooves from a modern master. The tracks date from 1974 to 1983, running in reverse chronological order.

Geo, a highly sought after Paris based session guitarist who has backed a host of big names now comes out with a solo album which he recorded at Studio Oubien in Bamako, Mali, hence the title. The superb guitar playing throughout the album is somewhat let down by the decidedly the worse for wear vocals on one track, 'Ali Mankiri', which must have been recorded after a hell of a binge on the local brew! Otherwise it's a delicious feast of soukous guitar from start to finish. Recommended.

Aimedo Star Nyura of Clan Langa Langa shining throughout on this soukous starburst of an album. O.K. So you've read my write-ups before, so who's the stars you've heard of? Lokassa Ya Mbongo, Shimita, Luciana, Esperant Kisangani, N'gouma, Manu Lima. If that little lot doesn't get your mouth watering wait till you hear it! Cracking pace for the guitars to keep up with set by Aimedo on drums, warp (seben) speed strings on all tracks. great vocals but guitariously glorious all the way through. Six tracks plus two semi instrumental versions guaranteed to finish off all but the most enduring dancers. Anyone not buying this album will be receiving a call from the little men in white coats in due course. Hah, Hah, Hah, .........What!!!......get off, I've got my copy

A rather different sound from Zaire as singer and likembe player Ngeleka Kandanda goes on tour to the U.S.A with his band. They play a variety of drums plus guitars and a bit of synth but up front is the wizard sound of Katombi Rigo's violin and Kandanda's likembe, which is like an mbira but here has the un-nerving sound of somebody stirring a bowl of wasps!
