MOZAMBIQUE

Not a lot from this very musical country due mainly to the wars, firstly for independence and then civil. What is available is first class and hopefully much more will follow. Also strangely enough a member of the British Commonwealth.

Very little in this album would point you towards a colonial past with Portugal. European and local music is mixed together as you would hear elsewhere in Africa but without the typically Portuguese sounds that would have made its roots obvious. Fast paced and full of exuberance with just a couple of slow tracks for variety. I particularly liked Matilde but I can honestly say there was nothing that I disliked in the other tracks. Have a listen and see what I mean.

From the South-eastern province of Inhambane comes the sound of the traditional timbila orchestra of the Chopi people. The rythmic zinging of the various types of wooden xylophones are accompanied by exuberent singing and dancing with various wind instruments who's sounds range from whistles to flutes and even dideridoo's and by the sound of it everybody had a great time.
