MAURITANIA

A huge muslim country but with a tiny population and very few artists known outside of its own borders.

AHL NANA L'ORCHESTRE NATIONAL MAURITANIEN RMLP011 LPx2 £ 0.00
I clicked on that first track and was instantly hooked - WONDERFUL. This album contains the first recordings of modern music from the Sahara and marks the birth of the genre that is known in the West today as Desert Blues. The group Ahl Nana changed the folk music of the Sahara to modern, cosmopolitan music by using Western instruments like the electric guitar that paved the way for artists like Ali Farka Toure, Tinariwen, Mdou Moctar and Bombino. The group is still active today but they only recorded 2 LPs and a handful of singles back in 1971 at the Boussiphone studios in Casablanca. Strangely the records were never distributed and therefore remained unknown for almost 50 years, until Radio Martiko discovered a batch of unsold factory stock a few years ago. Released at long last in 2023 you will find a selection of these wonderful revolutionary recordings.

KHAIFA OULD EIDE AND DIMI MINT ABBA MOORISH MUSIC WCD019 CD £ 0.00
The late Dimi Mint Abba accompanied by her husband Khaifa Ould Eide who plays the tidnit and guitar and her two daughters. The tidnit is by the way a type of lute similar to the Wolof halam or the ngoni of Mali. Rhythmic handclapping from Dimi and her daughters is an essential part of this beautiful Moorish music.

Released back in 2003 and backed by the group Sahel Hawl Blues which consists of local musicians from Moor, Fula, Toucouleur, Sonike, Wolof and Haratin backgrounds. She has combined the traditional instrumentation of the various ethnic groups from ardin, tar, tidinit and tbel to djembe, darbouka, and bendir drums with keyboards, electric guitars. She sings a mix of both traditional and modern songs as you will see from the clips. Three fold Digipak complete with 16 page booklet about Malouma and her songs. OOLEYA MINT AMARTICHITT LOUANGES - PRAISE SONGS 3060572 CD £ 0.00
From a family of Griots and blessed with a stunning voice, Ooleya sings praises to her tribe and her ancestors. Her brothers and sisters play lute, drum and guitar and provide the backing vocals but Ooleya's extraordinary talent and presence make her the star. The album will give you the impression of listening in on an impromptu session under the stars. Pure magic.
VARIOUS ARTISTS GRIOTS DE MAURITANIE 4644962 CD £ 0.00
Another intriguing album of traditional music recordings made in the field by Charles Duvelle the founder and director of the renowned Ocora Collection. The sound quality is superb considering the recordings were made back in 1965. Great sleeve notes with photo's tell you all about the ould, ardin harps, tidinit lutes and the various drums that accompany the shrill female vocalists and the hand clapping rhythms. There is also a section on the precise order that the music must be played in. 2T/48M)
