A relatively new country and although small it has produced some very good albums.

ABUBEKER HAGE HASSEN SITTEL - BANNAT (SONGS FROM ERITREA) RPM006-4 TC £ 10.00
Abubeker's smooth as silk singing and the smoother still chorus of Said Ahmed and Amal Ibrahim had me absolutely totally hooked within seconds. Released in 1995 and then based in Berlin, the three singers teamed up with guitarist/keyboard player Stanley Sarjo, sax player Christian Pointek, acoustic guitarist Jorg Weber and percussionist Neil Procopio to produce some incredibly beautiful and very catchy music. Not just the sweet side of traditional Eritrean songs, they have included acapela and instrumental versions and even a stunning reggae fusion on the brilliant 'Africa'. If I had to pick a word to describe this album I think AMAZING just about fits the bill. Definitely Recommended. [9T/48M]

ARON ABRHAM DEKI HADE RUBA VOL 1. RAGMC101 TC £ 0.00
This is the first album by Aron and you'll be as surprised as I was when you hear that superb husky and yet sweet voice. So sweet in fact that you'd swear it was a woman's voice you were listening to. However one glance at this ex-fighters moustache on the inlay card will dispel the idea. The music comes from the usual line-up of sax, guitars and keyboards and has a light and bouncy feel to it, some tracks are quite dance orientated in fact but it's Arons lovely voice that really makes the album for me.

FAYTINGA ERITREA 09360-2 CD £ 12.00
Her second album released in 2003 is so, so different from her first. Still sticking to the traditional style but with a much more modern sound. I said her first album was like Marmite you either love it or hate it. This album is honey sweet all the way through and 5 tracks went straight into my computer juke box. Just in case you are interested they were 2,4,5,7 and 9. If you are looking for something a little different then this album with its stunning westernised makeover is superbly different.

FAYTINGA NUMEY 09294-2 CD £ 10.00
Faytinga spent her early years as a freedom fighter but she has now turned her attention to the songs of the newly independant Eritrea. Shrill but sweet with a magnetic attraction, her beautiful voice trills out over the krars, wata, bengala and percussion backing played by the Sbrit Band. Released in 2000 this is a strangely different album that is modern yet retains its roots sound by sticking to home grown instrumentation. I would recommended it but then you have to say also that it is a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. [10T/38M]

GHIDION BERAKI TEWOFAYNETNA C6402 CD £ 12.00
Modern songs about topical subjects in 1990's Eritrea sung by popular artist Ghidion who now lives in The Neatherlands. I couldn't find much about him except that he also appears on a compilation double CD entitled The Best of 18 Eritrean Singers. His more traditional style song Walta Eritrea is to be found on that albums Disc 2. [72M/10T]

TESFAY MEHARI - FEHIRA ZAZIMNAYO VOL 3. RAGMC103 TC £ 0.00
Fehira the most famous singer, songwriter and fighter in the Eritrean Peoples Liberation Army and this is his third album. Recorded in Holland with the exception of the first track which was made in Asmara, it contains a whole range of musical styles. From the traditional Liwan through the hotter dance styles of Zazimnayo and Ambelay to the soft and beautifully sung Raina. The usual guitars, keyboards and absolutely essential sax share the stage with the traditional drums, flute and the beautiful sound of the krar (harp). A wonderful album. YEMANE GHEBREMICHAEL (Barya) MESOB ADE RAGMC107 TC £ 0.00
The late Yemane Ghebremichael know by his nickname Barya was one of Eritrea's favourite singers. He was exiled during the war but now teams up with the Zemen band to record this album at the Admas Studio in Asmara. From the softly sensuous sounds of Natzanet, he and the band proceed through a lovely set of songs. On the more traditional side the mournful and haunting sound of the title track gives way to the bouncy style of Kulu and its faster cousin Newri. On the modern side Ab Hilmi is simply gorgeous, so to the bubbly sound of Akmiskini with Yermane's softly warbling vocal style and the lovely mix of sax and guitars they come across beautifully.
