Led by the sound of the cavaquinho which is a tiny but strident local style violin and accompanied by guitars, ukeleles and a variety of basic percussion. Great vocals from the various members of the band but its the vibrant zizzing of the cavaquinho that makes this album a must for those looking for something very different. Navega was the debut album of 23 year old Mayra Andrade and was released in 2006. It is sung in the Cape Verdean Creole language and the title Navega translates as upon the waves. It uses traditional Cape Verdean rhythms and songs and mixes them with a bit of samba and bossa nova, jazz and even a little French chanson. The album won the German Records Critics Award which must take some doing as the jury is composed of 114 musical journalists. Comes with a 20 page booklet about Mayra and her lyrics.
