AMBIANA AFRICA DISCOVERY ESP26989-98 LP £ 15.00
Born in Brittany in 1964, Yolande Ambiana moved to Cameroon when she was ten. The International Musical Scene found her during the Discoveries RFI competition sponsored in 1988 by the saxophonist Manu Dibango. In Tunis she won the Grand Prix with the track Kunde which means in the Bassa language of Cameroon, I am free! It was released in 1988 under the SOYOKO Label or Sound Of Yoko. This French made version of her first album was released under the Espera label. For more information about Ambiana go to: https://yolandeambiana.wordpress.com/about/

ANGE EBOGO EMERENT NGE W'AYEM DTC019 LP £ 20.00
Magic has to be used sparingly when describing an album. However it isn't really descriptive enough when applied to this wonderful 1987 release from Ange Ebogo Emerent. It was an early buy for my own collection when I first fell in love with African music. A stunning mix of the local sounds of Bikutsi, Makossa and Zouk with jazz and some intriguing harmonies thrown in for good measure. Fast paced and definitely dancable and rather strange that this album has never come out on CD or a record re-release. Yet.

AXEL MOUNA TIME NI TIME 49910 TC £ 5.00
Released back in 1991 this is a lovely Makossa album from Axel who's super singing is matched by some great guitar playing. Don't know why the makers put in the slushy Na Biate unless they thought that you'd need to sit down and let your feet cool off after the first two tracks. Still there's loads more hot dance music on side B finishing off with the horn driven Latin sound of Suwelemba.

CLAUDE NDAM U NGUO YA KTC040 TC £ 12.00
Released back in 1991 this stunning album was featured on BBC Radio Andy Kershaw Show. Singer/song writer Claude is straight out of the mould of Pierre Akendengue. Beautiful singing and simple but very hookey acoustic guitar playing and drums that accompany the music rather than just provide a beat. Great backing from the girls in the chorus just adds the finishing touch to this musical masterpiece. Wonderful listening from end to end. ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL.

EBOA LOTIN THE BEST OF...- MEILLEURS SUCCES VOL I CDAT124 CD £ 0.00
Eboa's self taught music is simple and without frills and as he would say he knew nothing about music theory. However his talent is undeniable and his melodies are haunting. He began singing at the age of eight and composed his first hit song Mulema Mam (My Heart) in 1962 when he was 20. He recorded at Radio Douala Studios which brought success but little reward. He went on to compose the famous Mbemb'a Mot'a Sawa in 1967, which earned him the 1st prize of the Vick's Series contest (with Duke Ellington, President of the jury and Miriam Makeba as board member, among others) which sent him to Paris. He used this trip to press his greatest success Matumba Matumba which became a pan-African and international success as did Besombes. He died in 1997 aged 55.

ELALI MAWA 82846-2 CD £ 10.00
Recorded in France back in 1993 with the help of Lokua Kanza. Also in there for a duet is Charlotte Mbango on Mbanda. Not much info on the web about Elali but the CD speaks for itself. Just have a listen to some great makossa with more than a hint of soukous thrown in for good measure, it's a cracker with some brassey keyboards stealing the show every so often.

A celebrated group who travelled widely and always received a rapturous welcome wherever they went. It's not just their crazy outfits (Some of them dressed up in old Colonial soldiers uniforms, pith helmets, piss pots etc!) but their humourous stage act and hilarious dance routines have the audience in fits. OK, so this isn't a video, so what's the music like? Brilliant, you'll soon be singing along with their catchy vocals, which are superbly sung and their varied and wonderful music. Loads of guitar, horns by the ton and some of the most superb singing. It all adds up to an album that shouldn't be missed. GUARANTEED IT'S A REAL GEM.

GUY LOBE MALINGA ACPCG007 TC £ 10.00
Released back in 1990 this is a superb album by makossa star the late Guy Lobe who sadly died in 2015. Guy's wonderfully rich vocals are backed by Epee and Koum and Sissy Dipoko along with guitars from Rigo Star and Gilly Doumbe. Have a listen out for a touch of the Golden Sounds in the title track before it drives off at break neck speed. A mixture of songs sung in English, French and local language of which tracks 1,3 and 4 went straight into my computer juke box.

GUY LOBE SELELE 49913 TC £ 5.00
Great album both vocally and musically from one of Cameroon's leading makossa stars. Recorded in Paris at Studio Mikeli and released back in 1991. Starts out with loads of sparkling guitar from Geo Bilongo and percussive innovation highlighting Guy's smooth but husky vocals that have helped to make this album a number one in the nightclubs of Abidjan and Paris where he now lives. Guy wrote all the tracks and really shows the power and feeling of his voice as he cruises his way through the slower but beautifully sung tracks like Oa Na Oa. The title track and Ca Fait Mal are pure makossa magic. Backing vocals from Gilly Doumbe and Sissy Dipoko.

JOHNNY TEZANO GINA MATA CDAT112 CD £ 10.00
Having done a bit of delving on the web this album was released back in 1994 on LP and re-released as this CD in 1999. Musically it is more soukous than makossa as you can hear from the clips. Johnny was a full time policeman while he put out ten or more successful albums over 30 years from the mid 80's onward. However as piracy became more prevelant and retirement from the police loomed, he bought a car park in Douala and is now happily selling cars from it. Good luck to you.

LAPIRO DE MBANGA NDINGA MAN CONTRE - ATTAQUE NMG701 TC £ 7.50
This album is going to put your head in orbit after it blows your boots off! Loads of heavyweight Synth and Linn with magical guitars and real pile driving vocals from Lapiro aided by keyboard wizard Jean Claude Naimro. They've definitely cracked the mould with this real thumping dance album. Not so much breaking new ground, more like the effects of an earthquake. DANSE ATOMIQUE. Released back in 1992.

PETER M'POULY SOUL SAMBA JCPK01 TC £ 0.00
Soul Samba'? It's more Makossa than anything else with just a bit of Soul and that lovely Samba beat mixed in for good measure. Loads of horns, plenty of guitar and some really exquisite vocals from Peter. It's not quite going to set the dance floor on fire but it's guaranteed to provide the spark that gets the passions smouldering. A really nice musical mixture and as every track is great I have no qualms at all about recommending it, even if it is just to get 'Losikeya', the track I liked the most, very much 'Sam Fan Thomas' at his best. GREAT ALBUM.
PETIT PAYS AND LES SANS VISAS LES MORTS NE SONT PAS MORTS 843043 TC £ 0.00
What a beaut of an album. Gorgeously smooth vocals that blend perfectly with the horn and guitar backing and keep perfect time with the rhythmic percussion, even at top speed. Magic album for a bit of smoochy dancing with someone you know very well or even better with someone you want to get to know a lot better! Favorite track for me is the definite 'chassis shaker' 'Eyamoyo' on side 'b'. Vocals and percussion to the fore on most of the album but there is no stopping the guitar from making the running on 'Mulema'. Scores 10 out of 12 on my 'richter scale' but after shocks could be devestating! (i.e. when he/she says, lets listen to that again darling. Be warned!) [8T/42M]

Another happy and dance crazy album from singer Petit-Pays. No kidding, it goes like the clappers, I'm still trying to get my breath back after the first track and I was only doing the write-up! Some great guitar playing and a bit of first class keyboards with the drummer in the driving seat and Petit-Pay and the girls in the chorus working up a real sweat. A wonderful mixture.(F.T. SAM FAN THOMAS SI TCHA CD59801 CD £ 12.00
Released back in 1986 this wonderful album has catchy and unbeatable tracks like Noa and Si Tcha. As John Storm Roberts said - Sam Fan Thomas is the king of makassi, a lighter sound than makossa, but just as infectious. He's also Cameroon's best-known artist here (Francis Bebey, a special case, aside). This mid-'80s album was a major hit in Paris, but hard to find in the States. The familiar sound - soukous - reminiscent but a little more African and harder in the rhythm - is near its best here.

A cracking album that has only been out on LP until now. Super vocals from Sissy and the band who's fast and furious dance music make for a great album. Have a bash at the Bikutsi, Cameroon's own beat or listen to the slow S.A. jazz sound of 'Mouvement Uniforme', see if you can keep time with 'Time' or do the Merengue.
