BILLY BERGMAN AFRICAN POP - GOODTIME KINGS ISBN0713715510 BOOK £ 2.50
At one time it was drums alone that rocked crowds in celebrations across Africa. In recent years in open-air dance halls, however, the musicians have been welcoming back musical ideas that left Africa with the slavers and returned enriched by new harmonies and instruments. Successive waves of bajiro, calypso, rumba, soul, funk, rock, and reggae have come to be blended with traditional rhythms, and have spawned the exuberant sounds of highlife, juju, kin-kin, makossa, afro-beat, and Congolese rumba and soukous bands. While surveying the historical backgrounds and developments of the different styles, African Pop focuses on the flashy figures and supergroups that are igniting the enthusiasm of young audiences throughout the world. Among those included are: King Sunny Ade and His African Beats, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Prince Nico Mbarga, Tabu Ley Rochereau, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey, Franco, Orchestre Jazira, Manu Dibango, Olatunji, Bebe Manga, Sonny Okosun, Miriam Makeba, Les Ambassadeurs, Pierre Akendengue, Juluka, Alhaji (Chief) Kollington Ayinla, Maryse Ewanje Jean Bosco Mwanda, and many, many more. The first book to spotlight this dynamic new pop sensation, includes a wealth of photographs. This 144 page book was printed in 1985. Good clean copy. CHAPTERS.

RONNIE GRAHAM STERNS GUIDE TO AFRICAN MUSIC Vol. II ISBN0745306578 BOOK £ 0.00
A companion volume to Stern's 'Guide to Contemporary African Music'. Since then the World Music phenomenon of the last few years has created multiple new demands for African music - through recordings, live performances and for information and analysis. The guide gives the flavour and excitement of music from a continent with a richly diverse musical heritage. From Francophone West Africa through the Indian Ocean Islands to South Africa, Ronnie Graham introduces the reader to the roots, rhythms and mutations of African music. Published back in 1992 and I used to meet Ronnie down in the back basement at Sterns quite often and ended up helping to write a couple of bits of the book for him so I even get a few mentions in there. VARIOUS ARTISTS AMSTERDAM ROOTS MEETING LIVE AMSTERDAM TC £ 0.00
Recorded live at the Melkweg - Amsterdam Roots Meeting in 1987 and features some of the highlights of the festival. Starting with Thione Seck et Le Raam-Daan's 28 minute, 3 track set. The classic style singer, composer and bandleader gives the traditional Wolof rhythms from Senegal a new dimension. His emotional voice and beautiful arrangements send shivers up the listener's spine. Just over 15 minutes of Los Van Van who added the sound of guitars, violins and trombones to the Afro-Cuban 'son'. This brilliant 14 piece orchestra has become Cuba's most exciting dance band. Then comes a 24 minute, 3 track set from Kalum Star consisting of the finest young talents from Guinea, under the leadership of Maitre Barry. Finally to finish of with just over 14 minutes from Jil Jilala, formed in 1972, who are one of Morocco's most outstanding bands. Their songs, based on authentic rhythms, deal with the problems of daily life and demonstrate their unique voices and rhythmic complexity. The track titles are not displayed on the inlay.
